The Muddy Charles Pub was founded in 1968 as a non-profit organization and over the years has grown into MIT’s central hub for relaxing, socializing and exchanging ideas in the heart of the campus

Muddy in the News

The Muddy Charles Pub has received global exposure as a place where science is always brewing.

Muddy Charles Pub Board

The Pub at MIT is deeply embedded within the Institute’s infrastructure and is supported by a range of entities that contribute to its smooth and sustainable operation. At the core of its governance is the Board of Governors, primarily composed of graduate students, with participation from faculty, postdocs, and staff. This Board, led by an Officer team (Chair, Vice-Chair, Treasurer, and Secretary), oversees the Pub’s long-term financial health and ensures it continues to serve the MIT community effectively.

The Board maintains strong ties with the MIT Graduate Student Council (GSC), reflecting the Pub’s origins as a GSC initiative. The Chair of the Board holds a voting position on the GSC Executive Committee, while the GSC President serves as an Ex-Officio member of the Board. These interconnections ensure student oversight and allow the Board to stay involved in broader graduate student concerns. The Board also collaborates with several MIT offices, including MIT Dining, which plays a pivotal role by managing financial accounts, co-hiring the Pub staff, and holding the liquor license.

The Pub operates under a non-profit model, with its space provided rent-free by MIT. The Pub manager handles daily operations, pricing, staffing, and event coordination, ensuring that revenue covers operational costs and generates a small surplus for future repairs or upgrades. Affordable pricing is made possible through this efficient structure. Additional funding from the Office of the Dean for Graduate Education (ODGE) through Graduate Student Life Grants supports event programming and enhances the Pub’s community-oriented mission.
